The Spark of a Dream

In the heart of North Kolkata, around 1980, a group of former football players gathered regularly at Deshbandhu Park. These were no ordinary men—they had played in the top division teams of Kolkata and had even represented India on the international stage. Over cups of tea, they often discussed the deteriorating state of Indian football and wondered about the untapped potential of the young players they saw practicing in the park. One day, as they observed the raw talent of these boys, an idea sparked in their minds: What if they could offer proper coaching to these young footballers?

The Birth of North Calcutta Football Academy

By 1990, the coaching camp had grown in stature, and with the hard work and dedication of Mr. Bhattacharjee and his team, North Calcutta Football Academy (NCFA) was officially born. A dream had been realized. This was not just any football academy; it was a place where football dreams were nurtured, and the future of Indian football was being shaped. The academy was formally registered under the West Bengal Society Registration Act in 1998. In its early years, NCFA had its share of struggles, but the unwavering dedication of its patrons and coaches ensured that the academy grew steadily.

The Road Ahead

As the years went on, NCFA's growth was undeniable. By the end of the 1990s, the academy had built a solid reputation in the football world. The year 1999 marked a turning point for the academy when it collaborated with the German Olympic Committee to bring in Mr. Jurgen Mustaf, an international coach from Germany. His arrival in Kolkata was hailed as a momentous occasion for the academy, and it marked the beginning of a tradition of foreign coaches contributing to the academy's development. In the year 2000, coaches like Mr. Murkus Hamble, Mr. Alki Rose, and Mr. Martlic also visited the academy, further improving the quality of training.

Over the years, Jurgen Mustaf became a central figure at NCFA, and his dedication to the academy was so strong that he famously stated, “I am no longer a foreign coach. I feel like a Kolkatan footballer.” The academy had established itself as a place where local talent was groomed with the best coaching available.

Achievements and Challenges

Throughout its journey, NCFA became a powerhouse for young football talent. Residential camps were organized for the footballers, and they began participating in various state tournaments, winning numerous trophies. The academy’s footballers were regularly excelling in competitions, becoming a source of pride for the academy and the city. But despite all the progress, the academy faced a major hurdle: funding. Lack of funds posed a constant challenge, and the academy struggled to maintain its momentum. Yet, driven by the sheer willpower of a few passionate individuals, the academy continued to thrive, with regular health check-up camps, cultural events, and programs designed to promote the game.

The Academy Expands

As the years passed, the academy’s list of successful players grew. Pradip Laha and Jayanta Ghosh were two NCFA alumni who had represented the Indian national team in 1998-99. In total, 60-70 players from the academy were playing for clubs in Kolkata Maidan, contributing to the vibrant football scene in the city. However, the future of the academy remained uncertain. The lack of funding continued to be a major obstacle. The academy needed continuous financial support to maintain its programs, provide quality coaching, and improve the facilities. Without proper funding, the dream of taking the academy to greater heights seemed at risk.

The members of NCFA knew that it was crucial to find a sustainable flow of funds if the academy was to continue its mission to produce top-quality footballers. As one of the founders aptly put it, “Without proper coaching, nutrition, and infrastructure, the dream of producing world-class footballers will never be realized.” The call to action was clear: the NCFA had built a monument of football excellence, but it needed the support of the community and the football world to ensure that it didn’t come crumbling down.
